STHS Secondary Textiles Health & Safety

This fully accredited practical training course covers a wide range of Textiles machines and equipment that is commonly used by learners in schools and colleges.

As such equipment needs clear guidance for safe use, the Design & Technology Association recommends the Secondary Textiles Health & Safety Training course a must-have for anyone delivering teaching (or supporting learners) in the following areas:

  • Sewing Machines
  • Overlockers
  • Embellisher / Felting Machines
  • CAD Embroidery Machines
  • Textiles Heat Processes (inc. Irons & Heat Presses, Batik and Fabric Soldering Irons)

Note 1: It is usually possible to cover 6 hours’ worth of ‘hands-on’ Textiles machines and equipment during Initial Training, which typically runs from 08:30-16:00 including the starter and plenary tasks.

Note 2: When Textiles H&S Refresher Training is required, D&TA’s guided hours are reduced to 3-4 hours which means this can usually be completed during a morning or afternoon.

Wherever possible, we recommend hosting the training at your own school or college, using your own machines and equipment – this ensures the session is highly relevant to your department.

In addition to the practical use of the machines and equipment listed above, this course also provides the opportunity to undertake Textiles risk assessment, COSHH and maintenance activities.

After the session, delegates receive a range of editable digital H&S resources, current legislation and guidance materials.

All the activities conform to the current D&T Association Training Standards.

Book today to ensure your team is confident and compliant when using sewing machines and textiles equipment – practical, hands-on training delivered by experienced D&T Health & Safety Consultants.

Note 2: Courses are also regularly hosted at other centres (see Upcoming Events), which can be more cost-effective if only one or two members of staff require STHS training.
