PCHS Primary Core Health & Safety Training
The Design & Technology Association recommends that all teachers, technicians and support staff working in D&T should work towards achieving accreditation at the Primary Core Health & Safety Level.
This one day, ‘hands-on’ course, will enable delegates to develop the skills, techniques and confidence needed to teach D&T safely and competently in primary schools. Areas covered during the course include risk assessment, COSHH assessment, planning and practical skills, techniques and processes.
Note 1: No prior knowledge is required for attendance at this course.
Note 2: All of the required tools, equipment and materials for this course are provided by the trainer.
Under the guidance of one of our Registered Design Technology Health & Safety Consultants, delegates will learn how to use a variety of age-appropriate tools, equipment and materials correctly and safely, gaining knowledge and understanding to take back to school and support colleagues’ practice in KS1 and KS2.
By the end of the course each delegate will:
- Be awarded nationally recognised certification/accreditation through the D&TA scheme.
- Learn new or developed existing practical skills/techniques and produced a working practical outcome.
- Be confident in using a range of tools, equipment and materials with children in D&T lessons, including classroom organisation and the managing of materials and equipment.
- Be aware of health and safety requirements and know how to complete and adapt risk assessments and COSHH assessments to ensure the safe delivery of D&T activities in schools.
On conclusion of the training, course members will be accredited by the D&T Association for completion of the Primary Core H&S Training Standards.
All the activities meet current D&T Association Training Standards.

Note 3: Primary Core Health & Safety Training courses are also regularly hosted at other centres (accessed via the Upcoming Events menu), which is usually more cost effective if only one or two members of staff require PCHS training.
