What level of training is required?

The Design & Technology Association recommends that all teachers, technicians and support staff working in D&T should work towards achieving accreditation at the Core Health & Safety Level.

In addition, all D&T teaching staff and technicians, and others who support learners in the workshop environment should also work toward achieving accreditation within the particular Specialist Levels, and the Specialist Extension Levels appropriate to their work roles.

For schools and colleges, the D&TA Health & Safety Training Standards are set out as follows. Please click on the particular level(s) you’re interested in for a more detailed description:

What type of training is required?

Depending on your experience and current H&S accreditation, you will need to book either Initial or Refresher training:

Initial Training is required by those with little or no previous experience or certification on specific training standards.

Refresher Training is for those who can confirm that they have had previous training and experience on specific equipment and machinery, but their skills need updating or their Design and Technology Association accreditation is out of date (within a reasonable period of time).

How long does it take to train?

Training will always be led by one of our Registered Design & Technology Health and Safety Consultants. They work to a code of practice as part of The Design & Technology Association’s quality assurance procedures, with minimum contact times specified for the delivery of all of the training standards when delivered to groups of staff in schools and colleges.

The guided hours, i.e. the minimum hours, set by The Design & Technology Association are clearly stated in each specific course description and will always be adhered to.
