S10HS Grinding & Sharpening Health & Safety Training
This fully accredited practical training course will enable delegates to acquire H&S accreditation through a ‘hands on’ approach using the types of grinding machines commonly found in school workshops, in line with The Design & Technology Association’s guided hours for Initial Training:
- Grinding & Sharpening (4-6 hours)
Note 1: When Refresher Training is required, D&TA’s guided hours for grinding and sharpening can be reduced to 3-4 hours.
A typical day runs from 08:30-16:00 including the starter and plenary tasks, and it is also preferable that this training takes place at your own school/college (using your own specific machines and equipment) where possible.
During the training delegates have the opportunity to make their own sharpening jig and the following areas will be covered:
- The types and grading of bench stones that can be used to sharpen hand and machine tools.
- The use of a range of bench stones, including an understanding of sharpening angles and the use of honing guides.
- How to identify defects in grindstones and the procedures for dealing with them to avoid accidents.
- Safety in the use of abrasive wheels, inc. the hazards and risks arising from the use of abrasive wheels.
- How to assemble abrasive wheels correctly to make sure they are properly balanced and fit to use.
- How to store, handle and transport abrasive wheels.
- How to inspect and test abrasive wheels for damage.
- Appropriate methods of dressing abrasive wheels.
- The requirements for routine maintenance as required by legislation and recommended by the manufacturer of the equipment.
- The use of maintenance logs for machinery.
Following the session delegates will receive a digital download pack which includes current legislation, guidance materials and a range of editable H&S resources.
All the activities conform to the current D&T Association Training Standards.
Note 2: Grinding & Sharpening Health & Safety Training courses are also regularly hosted at other centres (accessed via Upcoming Events), which is more cost effective if only one or two members of staff require S10HS training.
